Horror this year seems to be divided into two halves, a lot of original content to start the year then a heaping dose of sequels and remakes in the second half. So, we're going to follow suit here and split this year into two halves. These films are 10 of the most anticipated horror movies being released in the first half of the year.
Companion - release date: January 31
The trailers for this one are fairly mysterious, not revealing much about the plot, and that is fine by me. Too many trailers spoil the entire movie, making Companion one of the most compelling on this list.
Heart Eyes - release date: February 7
The first big slasher of the year, and it is another holiday themed slasher to boot! This one could be dreadfully silly, but if it manages to have even a little menace this could be a promising new slasher that could become an annual staple for Valentine's Day.
The Monkey - release date February 21
Whether you like his movies or hate his movies, Osgood Perkins is now a name that gets people's attention. Throw in the Stephen King connection and The Monkey firmly on everyone's radar.
Sinners - release date: March 7
Michael B. Jordan plays twin brothers battling a supernatural evil force. And Ryan Coogler taking his first stab at horror. I can't think of a better reason to get excited about a movie.
Opus - release date: March 14
This is a new pop up on our radar, thanks to its positive showing at Sundance. It's an exciting cast: Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Juliette Lewis, Amber Midthunder. And it's created a lot of buzz quickly coming out of its Sundance appearance.
Until Dawn - release date: April 25
This one may only be on your radar if you played the video game, but even if you haven't this one looks like it could be a lot of fun. Having played the game, I'm very interested in how the movie plays out.
Clown in a Cornfield - release date: May 9
This may sound like a ridiculous movie just from the title and simple premise, but if you liked the hilarious horror comedy Tucker and Dale v. Evil then you'll want to check out Eli Craig's slasher with Frendo the clown.
Final Destination: Bloodlines - release date: May 16
As we get closer to the second half of the year, the sequels begin to kick in. Final Destination hasn't had an entry in over 15 years and I think Horror fans are finally ready for another one. It being the final film appearance for the legend Tony Todd propels this sequel into must watch territory.
28 Years Later - release date: June 20
Another sequel that has been a long time coming, and horror fans have been begging to see for years. Not 28 years, but pretty darn close. Danny Boyle, Alex Garland and Cillian Murphy all the return, cranking up our excitement to the maximum level.
M3GAN 2.0 - release date: June 27
Most assumed M3gan (2021) would be an eye rolling flop, but it was a surprising hit. If the 2nd installment can crank up the violence to maybe an R rated level it could be the birth of a new fan favourite franchise.
Watch out for our reviews on all of these releases and more. Thanks for visiting.
See you at the movies.
