The following list is not necessarily the 10 best horror movies out there, or the highest rated, but they are staples in the horror genre. If you are a seasoned horror veteran then you have surely seen all of the movies on the list. But, if you are just venturing into the genre and want to make your way to becoming a bonafide horror nerd, these 10 movies are must watches.

Halloween (1978) - You’ll find John Carpenter’s classic on almost every must watch horror lists, and for good reason. You cannot call yourself a horror fan without having seen this masterclass of tension building.
Alien (1979) - Another classic that, even 45+ years later, still holds up in the special effects and scares.
An American Werewolf in London (1981) - Here is a perfect example of it’s not who did it first, but who did it best. The transformation scene alone is a must watch for all werewolf lovers.
The Fly (1986) - Being Canadian isn’t the only reason Cronenburg is a must watch director. Body horror is a genre that has gained steam in the 2000s and The Fly is the quintessential body horror movie.
28 Days Later (2002) - While some may disagree that 28 Days Later is a zombie movie, I think it belongs in the genre and it may be the very best that the zombie genre has to offer.
The Blair Witch Project (1999) - Whether you love or hate found footage horror, it is safe to say that it wouldn’t have blown up if not for the brilliant marketing of The Blair Witch Project. Even 25+ years after its release, it is still one of the scariest found footage horror movies ever made.
Blood and Black Lace (1964) - Before the slasher boon of the 80s and the masked killer mysteries of the late 90s, we had giallo films in the 60s and 70s. There are many greats in the genre that are must watches, but Blood and Black Lace belongs at the top of the podium.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - A perfect blend of crime thriller and horror, one of the few horror movies to take home multiple Academy Awards.
Irreversible (2002) - New French Extremity is a genre every horror fan should familiarize themselves with, and this is the perfect place to start. Prepare yourself to be disturbed.
Terrifier (trilogy) - Speaking of extreme and being disturbed, the Terrifier series has introduced an entirely new genre over the years, the super slasher. Any one of the movies in the franchise is worth a watch, each one getting better and better (or worse and worse depending on the perspective).
